Embedded in the soft modulation of the small valley the museum building represents a unique and new exhibition concept. Visitors access the building from the plaza and enter the lobby, where all routes and directions of the buildings come together. In its outline the building is based on a radio system of twelve equal, yet flexible compartments with good access both from inside and from outside and provide a true video environment.
The outer compartment walls are in glass and resemble large TV screens. From outside the glass walls portrait Nam June Paik’s work on a large scale. Inside the compartments visitors can experience the original size of the work and obtain detailed information and a close view.
Nam June Paik’s work is easily accessed. The central radial element can be seen as a close circuit installation. It is linked by inner and outer ramp systems and generous stairs and allows for good view from all sides as to maximize differentiated visual experiences.
Attached to the central element independent units like satellites in clear geometry provide space for conference, research and media lab, a multipurpose hall, a small café as well as outside spaces for sculptures and for recreation.
The space between these sculptural elements allows for simple and spontaneous access to the art work and enhances the interrelation between inside and outside, between the real and virtual and forms a continuous and almost fluxus route without a formal beginning or end.
Visitors walking on this road will experience the installations from all directions, will see and will be seen and thus become an integrative part of the artwork itself.
Just like Nam June Paik’s work, the new museum portraits radical technological innovation. Using state of the art technology, the building is fully computer controlled. Also the free shape outside is computer generated and is made in brand-new material. The way music has inspired Nam June Paik in his work, the design of the new museum is also based on the principles of music. It has a clear and rational underlying logic and has a free and floating emotional outside.
The fine outer skin, partially transparent, partially translucent, partly opaque and made in slick glass, fibre glass and composite sandwich construction, is tightly wrapped around the inside.
Inside and outside amalgamate to an exciting whole. The inside form is part of an imaginative landscape, the outside becomes part of the actual landscape.
