The municipality Winningen/Mosel is located in a unique landscape formed by steep rock terraces, just upstream from where the Mosel empties into the Rhine.
The grapes growing on the terraces on top of the slate walls are primarily Riesling. With the extension of the historic vintner’s vineyard, the Riesling is given an architectural expression.
More so, the new building, which assimilates to the landscape, is thought to be a place for a sensual experience of viniculture.
Just as old vines are cared for by hand, the simple cube is, too, stacked by hand: The wall-stone basket filled with crushed slate, such as those used for walls in vineyards, refers to the construction of the walls in the vineyard and makes the design appear timeless, of high quality and durable.
From the outside, light only shines into the interior through single glass fields; otherwise, the massive walls have consciously not been opened up with windows.
In the inside, however, the new building presents itself with an open, clear structure:
A walkway, which passes through the entire building, allows the visitor to experience every stage in the process of winemaking- from pressing through fermentation to storage.
The oak, which is used for the windows, floors and furniture conveys a warm atmosphere that is further reinforced by earth-colored materials throughout the interior. The wooden floor extends to the outside into a roofed-over terrace, creating a small wine bower for wine-tasting.
Similar to farming a vineyard, local materials and production methods contrast with the efficient construction; as in the production of the wine, the construction too has been sustainably conceived. Much can be done by hand: the frame is largely prefabricated, permitting rapid construction independent of weather conditions, and the technological equipment permits the clean and regenerative operation of the vineyard with no emissions.
